People walk into our Staten Island school asking, "Is this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Karate? Kenpo?" The honest answer: our core is Sanuces Ryu Jujutsu, and it borrows the most useful parts of all of them.
Master Tom Curry holds a 9th Dan in Sanuces Ryu, one of the highest ranks in the system, plus a 7th Dan in US Black Cat Kenpo. Here is what that means for you on the mat.
A complete system, not a single range
Many arts specialize. Some only strike. Some only grapple. Sanuces Ryu covers every range of a real confrontation.
- Striking: punches, kicks and blocks for distance
- Throws and takedowns when someone closes the gap
- Joint locks and controls to end a situation without injury
- Ground escapes and grappling if you end up down
Built on leverage
Jujutsu was designed so a smaller person could handle a larger, stronger attacker. That makes it ideal for kids, women and anyone who does not want to rely on size.
Technique, angles and balance do the work. That is also why students of every age can train it safely for decades.
How it compares
Versus Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
BJJ goes deep on ground fighting and sport rolling. Sanuces Ryu shares the ground work but adds striking and standing self-defense. We offer dedicated jiu-jitsu classes too.
Versus karate
Karate centers on strikes and forms. Sanuces Ryu keeps the striking but adds what happens once someone grabs you.
Why it fits real life
Master Curry spent 20 years in the NYPD. Techniques that only work in a tournament did not make the cut in how he teaches. Every drill answers one question: would this work on a sidewalk?
Questions people ask
Do I need to be in shape to start?
No. Classes build fitness gradually. Most adults start out of shape and get there.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes. Kids learn controlled versions with a heavy focus on safety and respect. See our kids martial arts program.
